You may be under the impression that an electric toothbrush is easy to use. And, yes you are right. However, there those who still get it wrong or are simply uncertain about how to use electric toothbrushes properly. If you have an electric toothbrush or are planning to invest in one, here are some tips that you should know about how to use an electric toothbrush.

Tips on how to use an electric toothbrush

To get the most out of your electric toothbrush you need to use it correctly. There are many who simply turn the brush on and place it in their mouth but there is a little bit more that you can do to maximize effectiveness and ensure that you get the best cleaning from your electric toothbrush. Otherwise, you will not be able to notice the difference from an electric toothbrush vs. a manual toothbrush.

Here are some things that you need to know regarding the use of an electric toothbrush.

Make sure your toothbrush is charged before use.

Because your toothbrush can only function when it is charged, it is imperative that there is adequate charge in your toothbrush while you brush your teeth. If not, you may end up with your toothbrush running out of charge while you are in the middle of brushing. If your toothbrush is battery operated, always keep extra batteries on hand in case you need them urgently.

Take good care of your brush head.

The brush head is the top of the toothbrush where the bristles are. This is usually replaceable on many electric toothbrushes but they still need to be cared for. Properly maintained bristles will continue to give a good cleaning while bristles that have not been maintained may need to be changed before the expected time. Your brush heads should be changed every 3 – 4 months providing that their integrity is maintained throughout this period.

Pay attention to the time when brushing.

It is recommended that we brush our teeth for 2 minutes. As a result, a lot of electric toothbrushes will have an auto shut off feature once the 2 minutes has expired. In addition to this, there may be an auto alert feature that notifies you every 30 second so you know if you are brushing one area for too long.

This means that before brushing, you should divide your mouth into 4 sections and brush each section for a maximum of 30 seconds. Remember that the electric toothbrush will oscillate on its own so all you need to do is move it to the areas that need to be cleaned. If your toothbrush does not have these features, it is still advisable that you follow the 2 minute recommendation.

Know exactly how to brush specific areas.

Because the toothbrush oscillates on its own, there are specific ways to make use of this feature. Do not exert too much pressure on the toothbrush since this can cause damage to your mouth. For your gum line, place the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle so it can remove substances trapped between gums and teeth.

Brush from the outer to the inner tooth surface and remember to use both vertical and horizontal strokes when brushing. Don’t forget to clean biting surfaces your tongue and the roof of your mouth.

Store your toothbrush properly.

Some people prefer to store their toothbrush beside their bathroom sink. While this is not a problem, be careful not to store your electric toothbrush too close to your bathroom sink since it may fall in and cause electrocution.

After using the toothbrush rinse it to get rid of all toothpaste and debris and store it in an upright position. Some electric toothbrushes have a UV sanitization unit for storing brush heads as well as ensuring that they remain clean between brushings.
