Electric toothbrush vs traditional
Electric Toothbrush Advice

Traditional toothbrushes have been used for many years and have continually done well at maintaining oral hygiene and health. In more recent times, there have been modifications to the toothbrush and currently, there is a variety of electric toothbrushes available for purchase. The choice of using traditional toothbrushes vs electric toothbrushes is really based on personal preferences. The most important thing about brushing your teeth is ensuring that you brush them properly so you can remove as much food particles and plaque as possible as well as get rid of germs and bacteria.

There are still so many who are not sure whether they should use a traditional toothbrush or an electric one. To shed some light into this dilemma we will look at how they compare in certain areas.

Comparing the manual toothbrush with the electric toothbrush

Here is a much more specific comparison between manual/traditional and electric toothbrushes.

A traditional toothbrush is and possibly will always be the more inexpensive choice. Most traditional toothbrushes retail within a price range of $2 – $8. On the other hand, electric toothbrushes may retail for as much as $200 and there may be models that are even more expensive.

It is important to note however, that a toothbrush is not necessarily more effective because it is more expensive. Yes, there may be interesting features especially on an expensive electric toothbrush but this does not mean that a more reasonably priced toothbrush will not be able to do a better job.

You should also bear in mind that electric toothbrushes will have a recurring cost as you will need to replace the brush heads as often as you would replace a traditional toothbrush.

Brushing technique

As you may already know, the electric toothbrush does a lot of the work for you. All you have to do is move it around and make sure it is angled properly. Fortunately, the electric toothbrush is usually designed so it can fit in hard to reach areas and angles.

Once the toothbrush is held at a 45 degree angle, cleaning the teeth should be easy. Ensure that you read the instructions for your toothbrush before you begin to use it especially since it may have instructions relating to its use during brushing.

The manual toothbrush is a different story. You have to do all the work ensure that you move the toothbrush around a whole lot more in order to properly clean your mouth. In fact, when you are using a manual toothbrush you should try to keep the brush at a 45 degree angle and use circular motions to clean your teeth.

Ease of use

Traditional toothbrushes are very easy to use. It is hard to imagine a toothbrush getting any simpler or easier to use especially since it is lightweight in comparison to the electric toothbrush. The shape and length of the traditional toothbrush often makes it much easier to maneuver during brushing.

Electric toothbrushes are a whole different story. Some shy away from using them because they can be bulky and difficult to maneuver. To add to this, electric toothbrushes are often much heavier than manual ones.

However, there is one big positive to using an electric toothbrush and that is the fact that the bristles already spin so you do not have to do a lot of work while brushing your teeth. It is for this reason why some think that an electric toothbrush is easier to use.

Plaque removal

One of the main purposes of using a toothbrush is to get rid of plaque. Any good toothbrush should be able to remove the majority of plaque in the mouth. Both the traditional and the electric toothbrush are able to remove plaque. In some instances, the electric toothbrush may actually do a better job than the traditional ones.

One of the primary reasons is the fact that the brush head oscillates on its own and they are often smaller at the top so they can get in areas that would be harder to reach. Many electric toothbrushes actually claim to remove a lot more plaque than a manual toothbrush can.

Now that you know how both types of toothbrushes compare to each other you can make your selection based on personal preference. Whatever you choose, remember that proper brushing is very important.
